Acrylic vs Alkyd Exterior Paint for South African Homes

The exterior paint market in South Africa has shifted strongly toward acrylic. Here is why, and when alkyd still has a role.

What alkyd (oil-based) paint does well

Alkyd paints level exceptionally well - brush marks disappear as the paint dries, leaving a smooth finish. They are very hard and abrasion-resistant when cured. On trim, fascia boards and metal surfaces, alkyd paint provides a glass-smooth finish and good adhesion to bare metal. These properties made alkyd the default exterior paint for decades.

Why acrylics have largely replaced alkyd for Bloemfontein exteriors

UV breaks down the binder in alkyd paint faster than it breaks down acrylic. Alkyd exteriors in Bloemfontein chalk and fade noticeably faster. Acrylic paint also remains flexible as it ages - it can expand and contract with Bloemfontein's temperature cycles without cracking, where alkyd becomes brittle. Modern acrylic formulations have also closed much of the levelling and hardness gap.

Where alkyd still makes sense

Fascia boards, window frames and door frames where a hard, smooth finish and good adhesion to bare timber are priorities. Metal surfaces that were previously painted with alkyd - switching to acrylic over old alkyd requires careful preparation and a bonding primer. Internal enamel work where a high-sheen, hard finish is wanted.

Primer is the deciding layer

Whatever topcoat is used, the primer choice matters more than most homeowners realise. New render needs an alkali-resistant sealer before any paint. Bare timber needs a penetrating wood primer. Bare metal needs a rust-inhibiting primer. Applying the wrong primer under the right topcoat is a common cause of paint failure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exterior paint do you use on Bloemfontein homes?

We use quality acrylic systems for exterior walls - specifically formulations rated for high UV environments and wide temperature ranges. For trim and metalwork, we specify the appropriate alkyd or acrylic enamel for the surface.

How do I know which paint was used on my house before?

Rub a cotton wool ball soaked in methylated spirits over the surface. Acrylic paint transfers colour to the cotton; alkyd does not. This matters because applying acrylic directly over alkyd without a bonding primer can cause adhesion failure.
